We embrace a holistic approach to early years education, grounded in the following principles:
- A Unique Child: We believe every child is a competent learner from birth, capable of resilience and self-assurance. At St. Andrew’s, every child is nurtured to develop their individual potential, talents, and character.
- Positive Relationships: Learning to be strong and independent is rooted in the loving and secure relationships children build with parents, carers, and their key person. We provide a warm, consistent base of care and trust, helping every child feel valued and supported.
- Enabling Environments: The physical and emotional environment of St. Andrew’s is thoughtfully designed to support and extend children’s learning. From indoor learning spaces to outdoor play areas, our nursery is equipped to inspire exploration and discovery.
- Learning and Development: Recognising that children learn and grow in varied ways and at different rates, we provide a balanced and comprehensive approach that nurtures all areas of learning and development. This ensures each child is prepared for the next step of their educational journey.
EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) 2021
Our curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), focusing on prime and specific areas of development that enable children to thrive:
Prime Areas:
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development: This foundational area encourages children to build confidence, adapt to change, understand and manage emotions, and develop positive relationships beyond family connections.
- Communication and Language: Through storytelling, conversation, and attentive listening, children develop essential speaking, listening, and attention skills.
- Physical Development: Activities both indoors and outdoors promote small and large motor skills, body awareness, and control, ensuring children feel comfortable in their environment.
Specific Areas:
- Literacy: We introduce children to the joy of books and early reading, building their language and literacy skills through engaging activities.
- Mathematics: Using hands-on activities, we teach foundational concepts in numbers, shape, space, and measurement, providing the early building blocks for numeracy.
- Understanding the World: Children learn about the world around them, their communities, and a sense of time, developing an understanding of people and environments beyond their immediate experience.
- Expressive Arts and Design: Creativity flourishes through activities in art, music, movement, and imaginative play, allowing children to express themselves freely and explore diverse media.

A DAY IN THE LIFE… IN NURSERY
Activities in Nursery are carefully planned and organised in order to provide a range of learning experiences that promote development in each of these areas. We aim to help the children to learn through playing, exploring and being active. We enjoy a creative approach, including visits and visitors, learning with children from other classes and involvement in whole school events.
During the day, children will have opportunities to learn independently and be led by an adult. They will learn new skills and have opportunities to practise these in different contexts. They can access activities as an individual and as part of a group or class. They will make use of the inside and outside spaces and learn routines such as lining up, going to worship (when ready) and productions and events!
We use Song of Sounds to teach children phonics and this in turn supports their early development of reading and writing. It’s very active with music, actions and games. Sometimes Felicity the Phoneme Fairy comes to visit!
In maths we use the ‘concrete-pictorial-abstract’ approach which provides the opportunity for hands-on, tactile learning.
Our Commitment to Every Child’s Success
Our nurturing, experienced staff ensure that each child is safe, happy, and supported in their learning journey. With values of wisdom, grace, and hope, we are dedicated to helping your child grow into a confident, kind, and curious individual. Our approach includes:
- Exceptional Staff: Our team is trained in early years education and passionate about making each day a positive and enriching experience for every child.
- Enrichment Opportunities: Activities in music, arts, outdoor play, and hands-on learning allow your child to explore and build new skills.
- Inclusive Support: For children needing additional support, our staff is trained to provide targeted assistance, ensuring each child has the tools to flourish.
