Our Topic
Into the Woods
At school we will be learning that physical features are naturally created (forests, rivers, seas) and human features are man-made (shops, schools and houses). We will learn that a compass has four main directions, which are north, east, south and west and the symbols at the side of a map are called the key, which can be very useful for helping you to navigate yourself in the woods! Your child will learn that forests are found on almost every continent and they provide shelter for animals and wood for humans. In comparison, tropical rainforests are found around the Equator; between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. At home you can help by talking to your child about their local environment and researching facts about woodland wildlife.

Reading
You can find out more about phonics and reading in EYFS and Key Stage One on our phonics page.
Texts are carefully chosen, both for reading in school and at home, according to children’s development with phonics. The book band progression can be found below. Texts are also assigned regularly on Reading Planet.
Books should be 'decodable', which means that children should be able to read 90-100% of the words on the page independently using sounds they have already been taught. Re-reading books can also help children to build confidence with their decoding skills.
Teachers will sometimes send home books that are not phonically decodable. These books are for sharing and can be read aloud to your child.
