Our Topic

                  Under the Sea 

This term, Year 2 are diving into the exciting world Under the Sea! We’ll be exploring the amazing ocean habitats and discovering all sorts of fascinating sea creatures, from tiny clownfish to mighty whales.

In English, we’ll read and write our own sea-themed stories and poems, while in Science we’ll learn about different animals, their habitats, and how they survive in the underwater world. In Geography, we’ll look at the world’s oceans and seas and find out where some of our favourite marine animals live.

Through Art and Design, children will create beautiful underwater scenes using a variety of materials and techniques. We’ll also be thinking about how we can help protect our oceans and the creatures that live in them.

It’s going to be a fun, creative, and splash-tastic term full of learning and discovery!

At home you can help by taking a walk around the local area and identifying features of human and physical geography.

Reading

You can find out more about phonics and reading in EYFS and Key Stage One on our phonics page. 

Texts are carefully chosen, both for reading in school and at home, according to children’s development with phonics. The book band progression can be found below. Texts are also assigned regularly on Reading Planet. 

Books should be 'decodable', which means that children should be able to read 90-100% of the words on the page independently using sounds they have already been taught. Re-reading books can also help children to build confidence with their decoding skills. 

Teachers will sometimes send home books that are not phonically decodable. These books are for sharing and can be read aloud to your child.
