Year 3 Topic: The Egyptians
Get ready for an exciting term of exploration, discovery and adventure!
This term, we are travelling back thousands of years to uncover the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt. We’ll discover how the Ancient Egyptians lived, what they believed, the incredible things they built and the mysteries they left behind.
But that’s not all! We’ll investigate how the Ancient Egyptians continue to influence the world we live in today.
The Egyptians
Who Were the Ancient Egyptians?
The Ancient Egyptians were a civilisation that lived in North Africa for over 3,000 years. They built amazing cities, temples and pyramids and developed their own writing system called hieroglyphics.
The River Nile
The River Nile was at the heart of Ancient Egyptian life. It provided water, food and fertile soil for growing crops. People also used the river for fishing, travelling and transporting goods.
Pharaohs and Gods
Pharaohs were the rulers of Ancient Egypt and were believed to have a special connection to the gods. The Ancient Egyptians worshipped many gods and goddesses, including Ra, the Sun god, and Anubis, the god connected with mummification.
Mummies and the Afterlife
The Ancient Egyptians believed that life continued after death. They preserved the bodies of important people through a process called mummification and placed them in tombs with objects they might need in the afterlife.
Pyramids and Everyday Life
The Ancient Egyptians built huge pyramids as tombs for pharaohs and other important people. However, most Egyptians lived much more ordinary lives as farmers, builders, traders, craftspeople and soldiers. They ate foods such as bread, vegetables and fish and children helped their families with daily jobs.

Each Friday, at the end of the school day, children will bring home their weekly spelling words to practise. These spellings will be revisited in school the following Monday, when we will explore their meanings and use them in sentences.
Throughout the week, children will have opportunities to practise their spellings in school. However, regular practice at home is encouraged to help children build confidence and secure their learning.
Each Friday morning, children will complete their weekly spelling test.
Maths
Each Friday, children will bring home a piece of Maths homework to complete over the following week. The homework will reinforce and consolidate the mathematical skills and concepts being taught in school.
The activities will be designed to support children’s learning and encourage them to develop confidence in applying their mathematical knowledge independently. We encourage children to complete their homework regularly and to ask for support if they find an activity challenging.
