Year 3 Topic: Tools of the Trade
Welcome to the Year 3 page! This term, we will be learning all about the Anglo-Saxons. We will discover how they lived and how they influence modern day society!
Tools of the Trade
When it happened
The Anglo-Saxon period lasted roughly from 410 AD to 1066 AD.
It began after the Roman withdrawal from Britain and ended with the Norman Conquest.
Who were the Anglo-Saxons?
They were made up of tribes from mainland Europe:
Angles
Saxons
Jutes
They came mainly from areas that are now Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Kingdoms and rulers
England was divided into several kingdoms, often called the Heptarchy (seven kingdoms).
Important ones included:
Wessex
Mercia
Northumbria
A famous king was Alfred the Great, who defended England from Viking invasions.
Viking invasions
From around 793 AD, Vikings began attacking England.
The first major raid was on Lindisfarne.
Vikings eventually settled in parts of England known as the Danelaw.
Religion
Early Anglo-Saxons were pagans.
Christianity spread after missionaries arrived, including St Augustine of Canterbury in 597 AD.
Over time, England became mostly Christian.
Language and writing
They spoke Old English, very different from modern English.
One famous work from this time is Beowulf.
Daily life
Most people were farmers and lived in small villages.
Society had clear ranks:
Kings and nobles
Freemen
Slaves
Houses were simple, made of wood with thatched roofs.
The end of the Anglo-Saxon period
It ended in 1066 when William the Conqueror defeated Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings.
