Our Topics

World War Two

Our topic for the Autumn term is 'WW2'.

We will study ‘Friend or Foe’, a narrative text set in World War Two. Using this key text we will first write narratives based on the existing plot, followed by creating our own chapter within the book. Key grammatical skills will include: expanded noun phrases, a variety of clauses, effective dialogue and fronted adverbials in our writing.  We will move onto studying non chronological reports and write our own reports based on WW2 planes and air-raid shelters.

In history, we will carry out a depth study into the events of World War Two, particularly in England. Areas of focus include: countries involved in WW2, The Blitz, Evacuation, Rationing and Women at Work. We will develop our understanding of primary and secondary sources, as well as bias in different accounts. We will experience a workshop about evacuation and a National Rail visit to a station.

CLIC sessions take place 3 times a week in Year 5. Please see below for our focus Learn-Its. These are skills which we practise regularly within CLIC sessions. You could practise these at home with your child and test them - see how fast they can recall each fact.

Reading

Our school uses Accelerated Reader to support children to access texts that are appropriately challenging and engaging. As part of our school home learning expectations, children should read 5 times a week (15 minutes for Year 3 and 4; 20 minutes for Year 5 and 6). This is in addition to regular independent reading at school.  Children are also required to complete Accelerated Reader quizzes when they finish books. Your child’s class teacher regularly checks Accelerated Reader and can see the books that children read. Children also complete a simple reading log so that texts which do not have Accelerated Reader quizzes are recorded. This replaces the need for children to fill in traditional reading diaries every time they read, ensures children are motivated and engaged, and gives the teacher helpful information about their reading habits and choices.  On top of this, each child in Key Stage Two has access to 1000 e-books through MYON.
